Sahrein Maloh, MIPR, APR
Director, Sarawak Bureau
In the fast-paced arena of public relations and corporate communications, the margin for error is razor-thin. For Sahrein Bin Maloh, APR, a seasoned practitioner with twenty-one years of foundational experience spanning journalism, public office, and major corporate sectors, communication is far more than just broadcasting information. It is an exact science.
“To me, communication is delivering the right message with the right way so that the message is received by the target audiences,” Sahrein asserts. “And this will avoid misunderstanding.”
This core philosophy has anchored a distinguished two-decade career that mirrors the modern developmental landscape of Sarawak. From uncovering community stories as a frontline journalist to managing the sensitive, high-stakes stakeholder dynamics of monumental infrastructure, Sahrein has consistently demonstrated that clarity is the ultimate currency in public relations. A Foundation Built on the Frontlines.
Sahrein’s journey into the communication ecosystem began in 2004 as a journalist for the Sarawak Tribune and Eastern Times. Covering an expansive array of beats—including crime, business, politics, and sports—he sharpened his ability to identify what truly resonates with the public. This early investigative and storytelling grit provided him with a profound understanding of media mechanisms, a tool that would prove invaluable in his subsequent corporate roles.
Recognizing the power of strategic narrative, Sahrein transitioned into public service and corporate communication. Between 2007 and 2010, he served as the Media Officer for the Member of Parliament for P.194 Petra Jaya, shaping public narratives, managing press relations, and drafting critical messages at a governmental level. He then moved into the corporate arena as a Corporate Communication Executive for Padiberas Nasional Berhad (BERNAS), where he led public relations initiatives under the company’s annual “Managing Perception” program, focusing heavily on corporate social responsibility (CSR) and community trust.
Navigating High-Stakes CommunicationPerhaps the most demanding testament to Sahrein’s strategic capability has been his recent tenure as the Corporate Communication and Land Issue Manager for the Pan Borneo Highway Branch of Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR) Sarawak. Managing the public narrative for a mega-infrastructure project requires a masterclass in diplomacy, crisis management, and stakeholder alignment.
At JKR Sarawak, Sahrein didn’t just manage media inquiries; he proactively mitigated critical internal and external issues, navigated complex state and federal government relations, and handled sensitive land issue management directly affecting local communities. Furthermore, his expertise was regularly relied upon at the highest levels, drafting speeches and official statements for Ministers and VVIPs.
Whether advising multinational brands like Starbucks and Unilever during his years as a freelance PR consultant, or steering localized corporate strategies, Sahrein’s objective has remained unyielding: eliminating ambiguity before it turns into conflict.
Leadership, Education, and the Future of PR
Sahrein’s influence extends well beyond his immediate corporate responsibilities. He is a deeply committed advocate for the advancement of the PR profession in Malaysia. As an accredited member (APR) and current Director for the Sarawak Chapter of the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM)—and having previously served as an IPRM Council Member for seven years—he actively helps shape the industry’s ethical and professional standards.
His commitment to molding the next generation of communicators is reflected in his role on the Board of Studies for Strategic Communications at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), the same institution where he earned his Bachelor of Social Science in Mass Communications. Believing in continuous personal evolution, Sahrein recently advanced his academic credentials by pursuing a Master’s degree in Corporate Communication from the Open University of Malaysia.
As corporate environments become increasingly cluttered with information, Sahrein Bin Maloh’s vision serves as a blueprint for purposeful PR. By aligning the perfect delivery mechanism with a precisely tailored message, his work proves that strategic communication is the ultimate bridge between an organization’s goals and the public’s trust.
In an era where misinformation spreads easily, Sahrein remains dedicated to a singular, vital mission: ensuring that when an organization speaks, it is understood exactly as intended.
