DESCRIPTION:  \nPROF. DATO’ SRI DR SYED ARABI SYED ABDULLAH IDID won an individual award HIGH CITATION IN INDEXED JOURNAL AWARD GOLD & GLOBAL PROMINENCE AWARD GOLD won by Department (Communication) but he was leading it – WAPOR International Conference last year. \nCongratulations Honorary Secretary of IPRM Tuan Haji Aznan Mat Piah for his achievement recently. \n——————————————— \nWhen I joined the university in early 2008 after my retirement from government services\, I never aspire for higher achievement other than\, out of my passion\, to contribute back in a small way to the society and the country. \nMy hope was that I be given the opportunity to share my knowledge and experience with the students so I can play the role as an educator to produce graduates who are resilient\, competent and embedded with wisdom and maturity to face the many challenges in real life situation. \nToday\, I am humbled and honoured by the recognition I received at TAKREEM 2021. I owe this award to the inspiration and motivation not only from my senior professors and academic and professional colleagues\, but also from the students of various batches that I have taught at the university including international students. Not forgetting the support I received from my other half and kids who have been very supportive of my role as an educator. \nThey were the strength and drive behind my motivation. \nAlhamdulillah\, feeling blessed ❤ \nInstagram post: https://www.instagram.com/p/CQYEn5iH7EG/?utm_medium=share_sheet

SUMMARY:Jaffri Amin elected to Switzerland-based GA’s executive board member
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nKUALA LUMPUR: Institute of Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM) vice-president Jaffri Amin Osman has been elected as an executive member of the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management (GA) from 2021 to 2023. \nIPRM said Jaffri was appointed GA chair for the Asia Pacific region and a delegate-at-large for GA. \nJaffri\, an accredited PR member and a fellow at IPRM\, is a veteran public relations practitioner of more than 30 years. \nIPRM said the appointment was timely and recognised the growing dynamism of Asia Pacific with its geopolitics\, demographic and economic challenges as well as shifts and growths\, which would influence PR and communications practice and impact numerous sectors. \n\n\n\n\nJaffri and IPRM will advocate GA’s recently-launched 2021 Global PR & Communication Model\, a roadmap for corporate excellence anchored on research in his newly-minted positions. \nJaffri is the managing consultant at World Communications Network here\, which manages PR and communication activities since 1994. \nHe established the highly successful Kuala Lumpur International Public Relations Conference (KLIP) with local\, regional and global speakers and participation. \nJaffri will work closely with Joe D’Silva\, IPRM’s international bureau head\, to coordinate GA’s Asia Pacific activities with IPRM\, Asean PR Network (Jakarta) and PR associations and partners in Singapore\, New Zealand\, Australia\, Korea\, China\, Vietnam\, Thailand and the Philippines. \nGA secretary and chair of Public Relations Institute of New Zealand\, Fiona Cassidy\, said she was honoured to have shared the stage with Jaffri at public relations conferences worldwide over the past six years. \n“Jaffri is a dynamic communicator and an outstanding professional. He is committed to the continuing development of the public relations profession and is recognised as an outstanding and engaging presenter. \n“Congratulations to Jaffri and IPRM on having a Global Alliance board member. Jaffri’s skills and experience will make a significant contribution to us all\, and I look forward to working with him\,” she said in a statement today. \nIPRM president Datuk Seri Ibrahim Abdul Rahman said the 2021 Global PR and Communication Model and Jaffri’s multiple roles and tasks in GA were synergistic to IPRM’s vision to elevate the Malaysian public relations fraternity with best of breed practices and knowledge acquisition. \nIbrahim said IPRM had come of age and would celebrate its 60th anniversary next year in 2022\, growing its brand presence through many outreach programmes to members\, diverse corporations\, large and small\, and educational institutions. \nHe said Jaffri was instrumental in introducing IPRM CHALK programmes – an acronym signifying PR through chatting\, listening and knowledge sharing. \n“Through his efforts\, IPRM conduced 26 CHALK roadshows from visiting Petronas Sabah\, Permodalan Nasional Bhd\, Sarawak Energy\, Khazanah Nasional Bhd\, and PR sharings at UITM\, UM\, TARC\, and media houses too. \n“IPRM and our regional and international contacts too will assist Jaffri\, who has been tasked to lead Global Alliance Education and  Training Month in April 2022\,” he added. \nBernama former chairman Datuk Seri Azman Ujang said Jaffri had assisted many multinationals companies and government-linked companies in their media relations and corporate social responsibility activities. \nIPRM senior fellow professor Datuk Seri Dr Syed Arabi Idid said Jaffri had made Malaysia proud. \n“I have known Jaffri for many years now. He is one of the most active propagators of public relations in this country\, not just at IPRM but internationally. So I am looking forward to institutions of higher learnings in Malaysia to get even greater exposure in the global scene. Syabas Jaffri\,” he said. \nAsean Public Relations Network (APRN) chair Prita Kemal Ghani said Jaffri was a family to its regional public relations fraternity. \nGA chair of Africa Peter Mutie from Peterson Integrated Communication Ltd Kenya said Jaffri presented great narratives and made learning simple\, fun\, and warm. \nGA is a non-profit organisation registered in Switzerland\, representing over 300\,000 practitioners and academics across 126 countries worldwide. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nNews from: NST

SUMMARY:FEATURES News: Are We Doing Enough?
DESCRIPTION:Racial issues on the rise due to certain parties \nBy Ravindran Raman Kutty \nLast update: 26/08/2019 \nThe writer Ravindran Raman Kutty is an award-winning communications practitioner and a fellow of the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia. \nKUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) — As National Day approaches once again\, we reflect on past and current events and question the level of unity that we have achieved so far and whether we have done\, and are doing\, enough for our nation. \nAre we still weighing the differences among us or summing up the similarities that we share as one community? \nLooking at other countries and their understanding of independence and unity\, we have observed that the French are very patriotic; the Germans have forgotten the Berlin Wall and today are united as one; and China has gone on to become the biggest economic powerhouse of the world. \nWith National Day around the corner\, I am reminded of our former Information Minister the late Tan Sri Mohamed Rahmat\, who was also known as Tok Mat\, Mat Setia and even Mr Mat Propaganda. He did a fabulous job introducing the ‘Setia Bersama Rakyat’ or Semarak programme that was aimed at instilling patriotism among Malaysians. \nHow high is the level of patriotism among Malaysians today? How many of us fly the Jalur Gemilang at our homes\, offices or community halls? \nDuring the National Month celebrations\, what are the programmes that Malaysians should join and partake in to boost our sense of unity and love of our nation? \nMalaysia’s uniqueness lies in the fact that it comprises people of various ethnicities and cultures who live together in harmony. \nHowever\, it is sad to note that the level of tolerance and understanding of one another’s culture and religion seems to be slowly eroding. \nOn the same note\, our kind and caring nature was reflected in a wholesome manner when our police and more than 350 volunteers of all races and faiths joined hands to search for Nora Quoirin\, a 15-year-old Franco-Irish girl from the United Kingdom who was vacationing with her family at a resort near Seremban\, Negeri Sembilan\, when she suddenly went missing. (About 10 days later on Aug 13\, her body was found beside a stream in a ravine in the jungle near the resort.) \nThe spirit of the people involved in the search and rescue operations was commendable as they went out of their way to search for the missing teenager. Her parents were also impressed with the commitment shown by our search team. \nThen\, there was the other incident involving road rage where a 29-year-old man was killed on the North-South Expressway near Bangi\, Kajang. This very unfortunate incident goes to show that Malaysians are short-fused when they are in their cars. \nWe are simply unpredictable when we drive. By the way\, this incident had no racist undertones. It is a crime to beat another person but I sincerely hope that the parties involved in the case would be charged in court. \nMalaysians are generally loving and caring. Sometimes certain issues tend to crop up to check the strength of our society. We have had racial conflicts in the past but I feel that the divide between us will get worse if we don’t address this issue in an open and transparent manner. \nOur home is the most important ground for developing our children’s mindsets. The formative years of a child between the ages of one and five are so critical. \nChildren must be taught that they are living in a multireligious\, multicultural and multiracial society and must hence\, adapt to the lifestyles of others. \nWe cannot allow politicians to divide us. We must stand united to deflect all social\, religious\, economic and political threats. \nAs Malaysians\, we should look beyond race and religion to foster a national identity of our own. \nOur identity must be based on our performance and not merely by our race. \nWe should not succumb to threats in any arena that may tarnish our unity. We must unite to show that we are a force to reckon with in Asia. \nOur independence is our pride. It was earned through the efforts of our great leaders. \nOur neighbours are all enjoying double-digit growth and making a big impact on their economic front. Even Bangladesh has made significant progress in its textile industry. \nMalaysians must come together and work to build a strong nation. Ignore the one percent of politicians who are up to no good. Instead\, be among the 99 percent who want to do something good for the nation. \nOur National Day celebrations for this year must go beyond the usual clichés. \nIt must be instilled in every Malaysian that he/she is a component of a great nation. \n(The views expressed in this commentary are the writer’s own.)

SUMMARY:Public Relations as a True Profession
DESCRIPTION:Every organization be it small or big has the dream of having good reputation as reputation and positive visibility are vital to sustain in every industry in today’s world. And that is exactly why organizations hire public relations practitioners; to do the job for them. \nThe increasing demand for public relations practitioners in organizations denotes increasing areas of specialization in the field. These areas of specializations are often based on the organization’s need and nature of the practitioner’s tasks. Some PR specializations that’s widely in practice now includes corporate communication\, employee communication\, media relations\, investor relations etc. Meanwhile\, there are other labels such as spin doctoring and astroturfing among others that refer to the practice of public relations too. Even though these label often used depend on where and by whom its being practice\, it elicits negative perception towards the practice of public relations as a whole. \nWe often see some organizations practice sexism when hiring public relations practitioners on the pretext of ‘attractiveness’ and ‘better representation’. We also have seen some cases where politicians and public figures hire public relations practitioners to ‘manage’ their public image to manipulate and sweep off their wrong doings under the carpet. These malpractices makes the true capability of the profession questionable. These also give wrong impression about the profession. \nCould these be the reason why public relations has not been realized as a true profession? Could it be the reason why public relations has not been made part of the dominant coalition? It is such an irony that the profession that is responsible for positive image and good reputation itself has questionable image. \nThinking about these\, there could be several reason why this occupation is not given its due recognition in professional context. \nIn the current practice\, public relations can mean anything to anybody. This is because there is no one standard definition that define the term universally. Individual practitioners can come up with their own definition based on their experience\, nature of work and the organization that they work for. Similarly\, Public Relations Professional bodies have their version of definition for the term but it was not advocated properly because those people claiming to be PR professionals failed to acknowledge the existence the professional body in their respective nations. \nProfessor Hamdan\, the former president of Institute Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM) in one of his article in 2016 stated that there are still large number of people claiming to be PR professionals think negatively on the necessity to become members of the professional bodies. And he says Malaysia has a similar phenomenon. According to him of 30\,000 PR practitioners; mostly from the government sectors\, only about 1000 people considered it to be appropriate to become IPRM members. Others simply did not see it necessary or rather it was not made mandatory. \nThis gives room for the term and the profession to be exploited. This gives room for anyone to become PR practitioners; and this is one reason why making public relations a true profession is still a dream. \nBesides that\, it is pathetic that a practicing doctor and a practicing lawyer have mandatory licencing but a practicing public relations professional can practice it wherever and however they wish. There is no standards or rules that govern their practices. \nA recent study on the history of Malaysian Public Relations revealed that practice of Public Relations in this country dates back to 1910. It is evident that it has travelled very far from what it was to what it is now. Before the formation of IPRM in 1962\, some job advertisements for the posting titled ‘Public Relations Officer’ required only good personality and language skills. Other job advertisements only treated the portfolio at technician level. It was after the formation of IPRM\, the term gained its popularity for the right reasons. But even after more than 55 years of its existence\, the body is still struggling to materialize many of its visions. There is still no registry for Public Relations practitioners in this country; there is still no regulations for individuals who work or teach in the field of PR to register as a member of IPRM. Simply put\, they are not aware of its importance. \nHowever\, it is commendable that IPRM is striving very hard to have in place the Public Relations Practitioners Act (PRPA) as their ultimate goal. With that in place it can be assured that every public relations professional will go through the mandatory licencing\, registration and accreditation process. It will also ensure that the profession will be practiced more systematically with best practices by well-trained practitioners. \nNot surprisingly\, countries such as Nigeria\, Panama\, Brazil and United Kingdom already have laws governing the practice of public relations. It is high time for Malaysia to have the practice regulated to realize the dream to make public relations a true profession and to have Public Relations professionals’ part of the dominant coalition. \nFinally\, as the father of Public Relations and the first PR council member Edward Bernays said\, “If our profession was regulated\, it would give our vocation a status comparable to lawyers\, architects and doctors. Without it any crook\, nitwit\, dope\, charlatan or ignoramus can use the words public relations.” While the regulatory bodies taking enormous steps to legally regulate the practice of public relations\, it is in the hands of every public relations practitioners to take this profession to the boardroom level. For a start every individual working or teaching in the field must make sure that they get the Accreditation in Public Relations (APR) credential before they can call themselves PR practitioners. Because it is the practitioners that represent the profession; thus it’s vital for them to do it proudly with great values and best practices.    \nSivasangari Genapathy \nTaylors University
