SUMMARY:Effective Communication in Addressing Global Challenges Takes Centre Stage At 11th ICSR
DESCRIPTION:PUTRAJAYA\, Sept 5 (Bernama) — Effective communication in addressing global challenges took centre stage today at the lith International Conference on Social Responsibility\, Ethics and Sustainability (ICSR). \nGraced by the Tengku Ampuan of Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah\, accompanied by Tengku Puteri Jihan Azizah ‘Athiyatullah\, the conference was hosted by Universiti Sains Malaysia’s (USM) School of Communications. \nUSM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Industry and Community Network) Prof Dr Alan Amran said the conference was held given the need for effective communication with diverse communities and industries in dealing with current global challenges. \n“This is the role of this conference\, to serve as a platform for such engagement\, fostering dialogue and collaboration across disciplines and borders\,” he said in his opening remarks during the event here today. \nAzlan said the decision to bring ICSR to Asia\, reflected the growing global recognition of the region’s importance in advancing corporate social responsibility and sustainable business practices as well as Malaysia’s emerging role as a leader in these critical areas. \nThis is the first time the conference has been held outside Europe since its inception in 2012. The ICSR conference serves as a crucible for scholarly dialogue and practical insights\, bridging the gap between sustainability imperatives and the needs of the diverse communities crucial for their realisation. \nDeputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Mustapha Sakmud was also present at the event today. \nMeanwhile\, Alan in his remarks also addressed the role and challenges of technology and digital transformation in achieving sustainable development\, which would be the centre of discussion during the conference to be held until Saturday. \nHe said while technology offered unprecedented opportunities to enhance efficiency\, reduce waste\, and promote sustainable practices\, it also posed significant challenges\, particularly in terms of digital equity and the environmental impact of technology production and disposal. \n“The digital divide remains a critical barrier towards achieving equitable development. As we embrace digital transformation\, it is imperative that we also work to bridge this divide\, ensuring that all communities\, regardless of their socio-economic status\, have access to the tools and opportunities that technology\nprovides. \n“This is a challenge that requires not only innovative solutions but also strong partnerships between governments\, the private sector\, and civil society.” he added. \n— BERNAMA \nArticle source: Bernama

SUMMARY:A tribute to the public relations industry in Malaysia
DESCRIPTION:AS THE world commemorates World Public Relations Day on July 16\, it is a momentous occasion to celebrate the achievements and evolution of Malaysia’s public relations (PR) industry. \nThe PR industry has grown exponentially\, pivotal in shaping public perception\, enhancing corporate communication\, and driving strategic initiatives across various sectors. At the heart of this progress is the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM)\, a field beacon of excellence and professionalism. \nIPRM will be organising an international conference titled “IPRM Conference on Ethical and Responsible Communication” on this date to be held in Putrajaya which is expected to be officiated by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil. \nThe conference is expected to draw attendance from among PR practitioners in the corporate/private and public sectors apart from academics and communications and public relations students from universities throughout the country. \nThe conference is intended to bring to attention the significance of the media and public relations industry and practitioners to focus on the issue of ethical and responsible communication in their jobs. \nEvolution of public relations in Malaysia \nThe PR landscape in Malaysia has undergone significant transformation\, adapting to the dynamic changes in technology\, media\, and societal expectations. From traditional media relations and press releases to digital storytelling and social media engagement\, PR practitioners in Malaysia have demonstrated a remarkable ability to evolve and meet the demands of an ever-changing environment. \nThis adaptability has been crucial in navigating the complexities of the modern media landscape and ensuring that the voices of organisations are heard effectively. \nThe period from early 1970s until 1990s have seen a number of universities and academic institutions in the country introducing courses on communication and public relations which signalled the importance of producing qualified communication and public relations professionals\, practitioners and experts in the field to meet the needs of emerging Malaysia economically\, politically and socially. Starting with USM in 1971\, followed by ITM (UiTM) in 1972\, other universities like UKM\, UPM\, UM and later other new universities have all started communication programmes to train and expose potential graduates to the field of communication. \nToday\, we find not only public universities but also a number of private universities setting up similar programmes to teach communication and public relations. \nIPRM: A legacy of excellence \nFounded in 1962\, the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM) has been at the forefront of the industry’s growth and professional development. \nAs Malaysia’s national body for PR practitioners\, IPRM has tirelessly worked to elevate the profession’s standards through education\, training\, and advocacy. \nSome of the critical achievements of IPRM include: \n1. Professional Accreditation and Certification – IPRM has established rigorous voluntary accreditation and certification programmes to ensure that PR practitioners in Malaysia adhere to the highest standards of professionalism and ethics. These programmes have helped build a community of skilled and knowledgeable PR professionals equipped to handle modern communication’s complexities. \n2. Educational Initiatives and Training – Education has always been a cornerstone of IPRM’s mission. The institute has collaborated with universities and industry experts to develop comprehensive PR curricula and training programmes. These initiatives have enhanced the skill sets of practitioners and attracted new talent to the field\, ensuring a continuous pipeline of qualified professionals. In the recent past\, IPRM has attracted companies and organisations to send their executives to undergo training programmes with the institute on courses like media and public relations skills\, media relations\, crisis management and communication skills which have benefited the industry. \n3. Advocacy and Public Awareness – IPRM has been instrumental in advocating for the importance of PR in the business and public sectors. Through various campaigns\, conferences\, and public forums\, the institute has raised awareness about the critical role of PR in building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders\, managing crises\, and driving organisational success. In its activities and programmes\, IPRM has established collaboration with organisations and agencies in both public and private/corporate sectors to share experience on latest trends and developments affecting the practice of public relations nationally and globally. One example is IPRM’s involvement and participation in conferences like Kuala Lumpur International PR Conference (KLIP) organised by World Communications since the last six years of which IPRM members had benefited through interaction\, networking and knowledge sharing with participants not only from Malaysia but other parts of the world. \nEvery year\, IPRM has also participated in the World PR Conference held in major cities of the world organised by Global Alliance (GA)\, a conference that brings practitioners from many parts of the world to discuss current issues and trends of public relations. This year\, the World PR conference will be held in Bali\, Indonesia in November where IPRM is expected to be represented. \nIPRM is a member of the GA where its current president\, Jaffri Amin Osman sits as director in the Global Alliance PR and Communication Management in Switzerland. \nGlobal Alliance for PR and Communication Management (GA) is one of the biggest PR associations in the world with more than 350\,000 affiliated members from around the globe. \n4. Networking and Community Building – One of IPRM’s key strengths is its ability to foster a strong sense of community among PR practitioners. The institute regularly organises events\, workshops\, and seminars that provide opportunities for networking\, knowledge sharing\, and collaboration. These events have been invaluable in building a cohesive and supportive PR community in Malaysia. \n5. Recognition and Awards – To celebrate excellence in PR\, IPRM has established several awards and recognition programmes highlighting practitioners and organisations’ outstanding achievements. These accolades inspire professionals to strive for excellence and showcase effective PR strategies’ impact on business and society. One such example is the Asean PR Excellence Awards that was created by IPRM and inaugurated in 2015. \nLast year\, IPRM participated in the fifth programme of the Asean PR Excellence Awards in Ho Chi Minh\, Vietnam with participants from Malaysia winning several awards in PR advocacy\, campaign publicity and promotion. \nChallenges in Malaysia \nWhile the PR industry in Malaysia has achieved remarkable milestones\, it also faces several challenges that need to be addressed to ensure continued growth and effectiveness: \n1. Adapting to Digital Transformation: The rapid advancement of digital technologies and the proliferation of social media platforms have transformed how PR operates. PR professionals must constantly update their skills and strategies to leverage these new tools effectively. The challenge lies in integrating traditional PR practices with digital techniques to create cohesive and impactful campaigns; \n2. Managing Misinformation and Fake News: In the age of information overload\, misinformation and fake news have become significant challenges for PR practitioners. Ensuring the accuracy and credibility of information disseminated to the public is crucial. PR professionals must develop robust fact-checking mechanisms and crisis communication strategies to combat the spread of false information. \n3. Navigating Cultural Diversity: Malaysia is a multicultural nation with diverse ethnic groups\, languages\, and cultural practices. PR professionals must be adept at crafting messages that resonate with different audiences while being sensitive to cultural nuances. This requires a deep understanding of the local context and the ability to communicate effectively across diverse groups. \n4. Crisis Management: The unpredictable nature of crises\, ranging from natural disasters to corporate scandals\, poses a constant challenge for PR professionals. Effective crisis management requires rapid response\, transparency\, and maintaining public trust. PR practitioners must have comprehensive crisis communication plans and the agility to adapt to evolving situations. \n5. Maintaining Ethical Standards: Upholding ethical standards in PR is essential for maintaining credibility and trust. However\, the pressure to deliver results and the competitive nature of the industry can sometimes lead to ethical dilemmas. PR professionals must navigate these challenges by adhering to a robust code of ethics and prioritising transparency and integrity. \nLooking Ahead: The future of PR in Malaysia \nAs we look to the future\, the PR industry in Malaysia is poised for even more remarkable achievements. The rise of digital media\, the increasing importance of corporate social responsibility (CSR)\, and the need for effective crisis communication to address complex global and national issues in an unpredictable world present both challenges and opportunities for PR practitioners. \nThe Institute of Public Relations Malaysia will continue to lead the way\, guiding the industry through these changes with innovation\, integrity\, and a commitment to excellence. \nOn this World Public Relations Day\, let us celebrate the remarkable journey of the PR industry in Malaysia and the invaluable contributions of the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia. \nTogether\, we can look forward to a future where PR continues to play a crucial role in shaping narratives\, building trust\, and fostering meaningful connections in an ever-evolving world. \nINSTITUTE OF PUBLIC RELATIONS MALAYSIA \nKuala Lumpur

SUMMARY:Efforts in motion to push for PR Act
DESCRIPTION:PETALING JAYA: The Institute of Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM) will gather feedback through several planned stakeholder engagement sessions starting in October\, with a view to having Parliament pass a Public Relations Practitioners Act. \nIPRM president Jaffri Amin Osman told the Sun that the Act was needed to deter “unethical conduct” by some public relations (PR) practitioners who may embellish the truth\, do not provide source identification when making “outlandish” claims and practise deception in their press releases. \n“When in place\, the Act would ensure every PR professional undergoes a mandatory licencing\, registration and accreditation process. The Act would also ensure the profession is practised more systematically with well-trained personnel.” \nJaffri was commenting on recent press releases issued by some PR firms. In one case\, a press release claimed that the PR firm’s client is “the world’s largest IT infrastructure services provider”. \nHowever\, upon checking\, the client only has a 2.4% global share in technology design and architecture. The PR firm later changed its tune and claimed that according to an analyst\, its client was ranked “first worldwide by revenue in 2022 for Infrastructure Implementation and as managed services providers”. \n“When in place\, the Act would ensure every PR professional undergoes a mandatory licencing\, registration and accreditation process. The PR firm later changed its tune and claimed that according to an analyst\, its client was ranked “first worldwide by revenue in 2022 for Infrastructure Implementation and as managed services providers”. \n“Some clients could be unfamiliar with PR best practices\, while some PR firms struggle to balance client expectations with ethical and effective communications.” \nHe said the PR industry is highly competitive and some firms might feel pressured to use aggressive tactics to stand out and secure clients. \nHowever\, he stressed that “hard selling” is not considered an effective PR strategy and focusing on ethical and strategic communications will ultimately lead to more successful and sustainable outcomes. \nHe added that the growing demand for PR professionals has led to a surge in specialisations\, such as corporate communications\, strategic communications\, employee communications\, media relations\, stakeholder relations and investor relations. \n“The PR field also encompasses practices with less positive connotations\, such as ‘spin doctoring’ and ‘astroturfing’. These terms\, while used variably depending on context\, can contribute to a negative perception of the profession as a whole.” \nJaffri called on PR practitioners to adhere to the IPRM code of conduct in practising ethical PR. \n“Currently\, it is only a guideline and is not enforceable. This is why IPRM is working hard on the Act and wants it to be enacted\, so that unverified claims and unethical practices can be legally stopped.” \nHe said it is organising a conference titled “Ethical and Responsible Communication” on July 16\, in collaboration with the Communications Ministry and the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communications Management. \nHeld in conjunction with World PR Day\, which falls on the same date\, speakers will make presentations on ethical awareness\, digital and social media ethics\, corporate ethics in PR\, analyses of notable PR ethics cases and best practices\, among others. \nJaffri urged online and print editors to watch out for press releases with overly promotional language\, sensational claims or insufficient supporting evidence. \nAuthor: Joshua Purushotman \nThis article was originated from & full credit to The Sun & author for featuring our president Mr. Jaffri Amin Osman. SUMMARY:Trust and reputation as pillars for sustainable growth of organisations
DESCRIPTION:PUTRAJAYA\, 7 April 2022 – In time of uncertainties\, trust and reputation are possibly the two fundamentals that become organisation’s pillars for sustainable and future growth\, and this is where public relations (PR) can play a major role\, according to Secretary-General of Ministry of Communications and Multimedia\, Dato’ Sri Haji Mohammad Mentek. \nIn his speech at the launching of Global Alliance Education\, Training and Development Month (GAETM) 2022 last Friday (1 April) in Putrajaya\, he pointed out that the world today continues to go through a high degree of uncertainty\, and South East Asia continues to be impacted by global issues. \nIn this context\, he said\, public opinion remains central to shaping the perception which translates into image and reputation. \nHis speech was delivered by Deputy Director-General of Information Department\, Mr. Zainudin Haji Ismail\, who represented him at the event which coincided with the launching of the 60th anniversary logo of the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM). \nMohammad Mentek said: “A business can achieve its objective more easily if it has a good reputation among its stakeholders\, opinion leaders in the business community\, suppliers\, and current and potential employees.” \nHe said that corporate reputation is a ‘soft’ concept. “It is the overall estimation in which an organisation is held by its internal and external stakeholders based on its past actions and probability of its future behaviour.” \n“While reputation is an intangible concept\, it is evident that a good reputation demonstrably increases corporate worth and provide sustained competitive advantage\,” he highlighted. \nHe further said that an organisation which is well regarded by its stakeholders will influence other publics with words of mouth or words of mouth aided by technology. \n“The public will be more inclined to trust your organisation. Likewise\, generally government regulators will trust the organisation more if it has a good reputation\,” he added. \nGAETM 2022 was held in a hybrid mode that saw the speech delivered by the President and CEO of Global Alliance (GA)\, Mr. Justin Green\, and a live presentation of the Global Capability Framework for PR practitioners by Prof. Anne Gregory of Huddersfield University (UK). \nAttended by PR and communication practitioners\, as well as communication academics and students from across the globe\, the event was regarded as important as the social media and digital transformation today rules the communication world. \nMohamad Mentek told the audience that the Ministry recognised the commitment and contribution of outstanding organisations and individuals who share important stories\, creative strategies\, leadership skills and communication tactics as part of their contributions to global PR and communication body of knowledge. \nThe event was chaired by Mr. Jaffri Amin Osman\, the Global Alliance (GA) chair of the Asia Pacific\, who is also the Vice-President of IPRM and the CEO of World Communications\, a public relations consultancy firm. Jaffri is the first Malaysian to be elected to the Switzerland-based GA executive board. \nPresent at the event was President of IPRM\, Dato’ Sri Haji Ibrahim Abdul Rahman and President of ASEAN Public Relations Network (APRN)\, Ibu Prita Kemal Gani who appeared online. \n  \n \nGAETM is the first and largest free global education programme undertaken so far. Through collaboration of members\, GA held global educational and training for communication and public relations professionals during April and May last year. This included over 150 webinars with professionals sharing their knowledge and insights from around the world during the unprecedented time. \nThe event this year featured sharing of public relations and communication materials like articles\, videos\, case studies\, podcasts\, and other related PR materials. The 24-hourly video marathon which was held from 5 p.m on 31 March until 5 p.m on 1 April was launched from its Kuala Lumpur office. \nCurrent issues and topics shared throughout GAETM 2022 included digital transformation\, trust issues\, empathy\, impacts of Korean culture\, brand inclusivity and diversity\, future of PR\, ethics in social media\, and voices of the young. These materials are available in the format of videos\, podcasts\, articles\, and special write-ups. \nAmong others\, the objectives of GAETM 2022 are to share impact assessment of COVID-19 to public relations and communication profession as well as the resilience of learning institutions; to share how IR 4.0 and soon IR 5.0 dramatically changed the landscape of the profession and institutions; to share rescue strategy in terms of transforming the way to do business. \nIt is also aimed to prepare professionals and institutions in welcoming recovery and sustainability post-pandemic\, assess the damage and the remaining assets\, and make bold and courageous moves to regain business brands hit by the pandemic\, apart from sharing latest PR and communication tactics and strategies relevant to corporate sector and institutions globally. \nThe event also witnessed the handing over of the Malay translation of the Global Alliance PR and Communication Model to the representative of the Secretary-General by Dr. Wan Norbani Wan Noordin of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) who led the team to undertake the translation work. ***

DESCRIPTION:  \nPROF. DATO’ SRI DR SYED ARABI SYED ABDULLAH IDID won an individual award HIGH CITATION IN INDEXED JOURNAL AWARD GOLD & GLOBAL PROMINENCE AWARD GOLD won by Department (Communication) but he was leading it – WAPOR International Conference last year. \nCongratulations Honorary Secretary of IPRM Tuan Haji Aznan Mat Piah for his achievement recently. \n——————————————— \nWhen I joined the university in early 2008 after my retirement from government services\, I never aspire for higher achievement other than\, out of my passion\, to contribute back in a small way to the society and the country. \nMy hope was that I be given the opportunity to share my knowledge and experience with the students so I can play the role as an educator to produce graduates who are resilient\, competent and embedded with wisdom and maturity to face the many challenges in real life situation. \nToday\, I am humbled and honoured by the recognition I received at TAKREEM 2021. I owe this award to the inspiration and motivation not only from my senior professors and academic and professional colleagues\, but also from the students of various batches that I have taught at the university including international students. Not forgetting the support I received from my other half and kids who have been very supportive of my role as an educator. \nThey were the strength and drive behind my motivation. \nAlhamdulillah\, feeling blessed ❤ \nInstagram post: https://www.instagram.com/p/CQYEn5iH7EG/?utm_medium=share_sheet

SUMMARY:Jaffri Amin elected to Switzerland-based GA’s executive board member
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nKUALA LUMPUR: Institute of Public Relations Malaysia (IPRM) vice-president Jaffri Amin Osman has been elected as an executive member of the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management (GA) from 2021 to 2023. \nIPRM said Jaffri was appointed GA chair for the Asia Pacific region and a delegate-at-large for GA. \nJaffri\, an accredited PR member and a fellow at IPRM\, is a veteran public relations practitioner of more than 30 years. \nIPRM said the appointment was timely and recognised the growing dynamism of Asia Pacific with its geopolitics\, demographic and economic challenges as well as shifts and growths\, which would influence PR and communications practice and impact numerous sectors. \n\n\n\n\nJaffri and IPRM will advocate GA’s recently-launched 2021 Global PR & Communication Model\, a roadmap for corporate excellence anchored on research in his newly-minted positions. \nJaffri is the managing consultant at World Communications Network here\, which manages PR and communication activities since 1994. \nHe established the highly successful Kuala Lumpur International Public Relations Conference (KLIP) with local\, regional and global speakers and participation. \nJaffri will work closely with Joe D’Silva\, IPRM’s international bureau head\, to coordinate GA’s Asia Pacific activities with IPRM\, Asean PR Network (Jakarta) and PR associations and partners in Singapore\, New Zealand\, Australia\, Korea\, China\, Vietnam\, Thailand and the Philippines. \nGA secretary and chair of Public Relations Institute of New Zealand\, Fiona Cassidy\, said she was honoured to have shared the stage with Jaffri at public relations conferences worldwide over the past six years. \n“Jaffri is a dynamic communicator and an outstanding professional. He is committed to the continuing development of the public relations profession and is recognised as an outstanding and engaging presenter. \n“Congratulations to Jaffri and IPRM on having a Global Alliance board member. Jaffri’s skills and experience will make a significant contribution to us all\, and I look forward to working with him\,” she said in a statement today. \nIPRM president Datuk Seri Ibrahim Abdul Rahman said the 2021 Global PR and Communication Model and Jaffri’s multiple roles and tasks in GA were synergistic to IPRM’s vision to elevate the Malaysian public relations fraternity with best of breed practices and knowledge acquisition. \nIbrahim said IPRM had come of age and would celebrate its 60th anniversary next year in 2022\, growing its brand presence through many outreach programmes to members\, diverse corporations\, large and small\, and educational institutions. \nHe said Jaffri was instrumental in introducing IPRM CHALK programmes – an acronym signifying PR through chatting\, listening and knowledge sharing. \n“Through his efforts\, IPRM conduced 26 CHALK roadshows from visiting Petronas Sabah\, Permodalan Nasional Bhd\, Sarawak Energy\, Khazanah Nasional Bhd\, and PR sharings at UITM\, UM\, TARC\, and media houses too. \n“IPRM and our regional and international contacts too will assist Jaffri\, who has been tasked to lead Global Alliance Education and  Training Month in April 2022\,” he added. \nBernama former chairman Datuk Seri Azman Ujang said Jaffri had assisted many multinationals companies and government-linked companies in their media relations and corporate social responsibility activities. \nIPRM senior fellow professor Datuk Seri Dr Syed Arabi Idid said Jaffri had made Malaysia proud. \n“I have known Jaffri for many years now. He is one of the most active propagators of public relations in this country\, not just at IPRM but internationally. So I am looking forward to institutions of higher learnings in Malaysia to get even greater exposure in the global scene. Syabas Jaffri\,” he said. \nAsean Public Relations Network (APRN) chair Prita Kemal Ghani said Jaffri was a family to its regional public relations fraternity. \nGA chair of Africa Peter Mutie from Peterson Integrated Communication Ltd Kenya said Jaffri presented great narratives and made learning simple\, fun\, and warm. \nGA is a non-profit organisation registered in Switzerland\, representing over 300\,000 practitioners and academics across 126 countries worldwide. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nNews from: NST
