Public Relations in turbulent times : an IPRM Sabah chapter seminar and Accreditation workshop.
With a yen for learning and upskilling their PR skills, 44 Public relations practitioners from the government, GLCs and NGOs gathered at an accreditation workshop organized by IPRM’s Sabah chapter. Themed “Public Relations in Turbulent times”, the event was launched by Tuan Haji Almain bin Ajirul, Director of Sabah’s Information Division and Encik Suzalie bin Mohamad (Academic and Student Affairs) from Universiti Sains Malaysia. Encik Suzalie so graciously stood in for Prof Dato’ Hj Mohd Hamdan Adnan, Dean of the School of Social Sciences, who was away in Timor Leste. Due credit and recognition goes to Prof Dato Mohd Hamdan who mooted the idea of such a workshop months ago, with his able team of PR lecturers and students from Universiti Malaysia Sabah.
The range of PR knowledge and shared experience drew deep interest among the attendees who came from Petronas, Sabah Electricity Board, Yayasan Sabah, Sabah Tourism Board, Sabah City Council, the hospitality business to name a few, and government public relations practitioners.
PR competency in several domain areas as innovative leadership, organizational excellence, the 16 PR practice areas – evaluation ROIs, etc, provided fodder for deliberation of the role and execution of Public Relations programmes in nation building and societal upliftment, in light of globalization pressures, rising public expectations and technological improvements.
With a focus on accreditation, and shared learning through local case study submissions, participants are encouraged to be change cataysts in their respective spheres. Indeed turbulent times require PR practitioners to be so.
